Charleston, South Carolina, Futuristic Yet Fantastic and Classic City

The Cooper River Bridge’s metallic dorsal fins cascade in the breeze, a post-modern architectural sight not far from cobblestones and carriages. Charleston is a hybrid of the modern and the historic. From the blue bloods' houses of Rainbow Row to the gigantic warehouse-size building of an on-demand web publisher BookSurge, Charleston runs the gamut.

It is a city where a business was built upon non-profit fund-raising tabulation software but where an arts festival celebrates traditional classical music.

All the amenities of chain stores are there as are the eccentricities of little shops. A cat wanders through a store window. A dog meanders through a bookstore. Down from where once stood more little touristy shops, though, there looms a Sax Fifth Avenue.

No wonder that such a place always inspires me as a science fiction and fantasy author. It is itself a blend of staunch linear buildings and structures intended for pragmatic purposes and the whimsy of salt sea, flags on ancient structures, and fun-loving pixies cavorting through the oaks.
